Just Say No to Stress

Stress is real for many people including myself.    This week I had a fellow nursing classmate and team member curse me out when I asked her had she done her work on our group project.   She hadn’t made any effort so she decided to drop the F-bomb in our clinical conference meeting about how ranted about how she was NOT going to do anything. This was stressful and in this case unnecessary.   It was even more stressful because other students, her peers, just sat there and said nothing.   Basically, not one student had worked on the assigned worksheets for our project plan except myself so I was the “bad guy.”   Perhaps, this is the difference between being a 40+ yr old student and a 20-something who would rather wait until the last minute or pray that someone else will pick up their slack. Sometimes stress is good and natural. It can motivate you, drive you to excel or achieve a goal. It occurs when we start a new job, buy a new home or plan...

For Sherry Aronld

Virtual Run for Sherry Arnold- February 11, 2012 On January 7, 2012, my cousin Sherry, age 43, left her house in the small town of Sidney, Montana at 6:30 a.m. for an early morning run. She didn’t always run in the morning because as a teacher, it was often difficult to fit in runs before she headed to Sidney High School to teach math. January 7 was a Saturday, however, and Sherry had a bit more time to spare. After her run she planned to meet her sister, Rhonda, and head out to their parent’s ranch a few miles outside of town. Her husband, Gary, had gone for a walk at 5:30 a.m. and when he returned home he could tell that Sherry had already left for her run because of the toothpaste splatters in the sink and a light that was on in the kitchen. Sherry often ran within the town limits and January 7 was no exception. When Sherry did not come home later that morning, however, her husband began to worry. He called the police and a search ensued. By 3:00 p.m. h...

Evaluate & Adjust

"Your attitude determines your actions, and your actions determine your accomplishment." John C. Maxwell, Your Road Map For Success Got up at 4am to read some journal articles and could barely see straight.   I struggled until 8am then went back to bed.   I glanced at FACEBOOK to see if my running club was still having the 10 mile club run.   It was still on, but I was not. I so was tired.   I had been getting up at 3:45 am all week trying to maintain my clinical and course schedules and the realization that I ….Ms. Energizer Bunny just needed to go back to bed. Time to re-adjust I thought.   I planned on running the Baltimore/Annapolis Half Marathon in March, but when they offered refunds to transfers; I took it.   I just have to accept that I don’t have the time in my schedule to train like I had hoped while in my last term of nursing school and preparing for the a national boards in May.   All is not lost though. ...

Splash and Dash: Swim Lessons

So into the pool I went.  My coach, a 19 yr old college student,  introduced himself.  He smiled warmly then... he socked it to me!!!  This was the longest 30 minutes of my life.  Kick board and flippers on and then back and forth I went in the pool. This was my first lesson.  Is this guy trying to kill me?   I am twice his age.  I said nothing and kept moving. We went back and forth in the training pool.  Then he took the kick board away.  I thought…Noooooooooo.  I was nervous.  So we practiced blowing bubbles under the pool and up then bubbles under the water then up and again… Between kicking, bubbles, focusing…I was worn out in one half hour.  How can this be?  I am the cardio girl.  I love cardio and I could hardly manage to get through this lesson.  I learned a lot from this lesson.  Well…re-learned.   Strength training is key for all sports, especially...

A Snowy Day

It is 5am on Sunday morning.   I walk slowly to the office where I sit on my green exercise ball for 4 hours reading journals and textbooks.   Did I forget to say I am a nursing student at Johns Hopkins Nursing School?   This is my weekly pattern.   Get up early. Read for hours and treat myself to the long slow run.   I began this little routine back in 1980s when I started college the first time and pretty much maintained the same routine for 20 yrs.   Today was as balmy, 28F degrees, icy with snow flurries; but I was determined to continue the tradition.   I am one of those runners who is always and never in training for something mostly because I enjoy staying active and like keeping 10-12 miles under my belt at all times just in case there is a half marathon that I would like to do or have time for at any given moment.   Time goals are a thing of the past for me.   I have transformed from the racer to the fitness runner...
